The Trading Post

Name one thing you could use help with and one thing you could help someone else do.

Time4–5 minutes

Group size4+ people

FormatTable groups

MaterialsNone, Optional note cards or a shared document

01

What this accomplishes

Participants make a fast offer-and-request exchange, then look for useful matches at the table. Notes are optional; the conversation works without supplies.

  • Match needs with expertise
  • Create practical follow-up connections
02

Before you begin

Materials

  • None
  • Optional note cards or a shared document

Preparation

  • Display a visible timer
  • Plan to hear no more than two table reports
03

What to say

Here is the ask. You will work only with your table, the timer will stay visible, and passing is always fine.
04

How to run it

  1. 1

Give everyone 20 seconds to choose one bounded request and one realistic offer.

  2. 2

Each person shares both in 30 seconds or less.

  3. 3

Give tables 90 seconds to find matches and agree on any follow-up.

  4. 4

Invite two tables to report a match, not a private request.

05

Prompts to use

I could use a practical idea for…

I could help someone with…

A follow-up I would welcome is…

06

Adapt it to the room

Small group

Use one table and let everyone contribute; skip the room report.

Large group

Run the activity simultaneously at tables of four to six, then hear only two brief reports.

Virtual

Use breakout rooms of four to six, broadcast the prompt and timer, and collect one response in chat when rooms close.

07

Accessibility & inclusion

  • Keep participation seated by default.
  • Display and read the prompt aloud.
  • Allow anyone to pass, write, or contribute through a tablemate.
08

Debrief, if useful

What useful exchange became possible in five minutes?

09

Why it works—and what can go wrong

Why it works

Reciprocal asking prevents the activity from casting anyone only as an expert or only as someone who needs help.

Watch out for

  • Keep requests small and appropriate for a public table.
  • Do not pressure anyone to commit beyond the session.
