What to say
“We have two minutes for four animal moves. I will do them with you. Make space, move safely, and freeze when I call the next animal.”
How to run it
- 1
Bear crawl toward the door or a marked point.
- 2
Crab walk back toward your spot.
- 3
Stand like a flamingo for ten seconds.
- 4
Finish with five frog jumps, then freeze.
Prompts to use
Adapt it to the room
Small group
Run it exactly as written and stop when the timer ends.
Large group
Demonstrate once, start everyone together, and use one unmistakable stop signal.
Virtual
Call each animal move on camera and offer standing and seated versions side by side.
Accessibility & inclusion
- Offer seated animal moves: bear paws, crab pinches, flamingo wings, and five frog-arm pushes.
- Use each student's own space instead of a route if aisles are tight.
- Teacher participation makes the silliness shared rather than student-facing.
Why it works—and what can go wrong
Why it works
Four short movement patterns provide novelty, whole-body effort, and a crisp stopping point.
Watch out for
- Clear the route first and prohibit racing or contact.
- Do not attach a lesson, reflection, or public share-out afterward.
- Announce the length, honor it, and move directly into the next task.
