What to say
“On three, show one to five for how you are doing today—or keep your hand down to pass. No talking and no explanations.”

Keep it comfortable and useful.
Make room for everyone
- Display and read the prompt aloud.
- Allow speaking, writing, pointing, chat, or passing with equal status.
- Never require eye contact, an explanation, or a public follow-up.
Watch out for
- Offer number cards, chat, or another signal for anyone who cannot or does not want to use fingers.
- Follow up privately after the meeting; the check-in identifies where support may be needed but is not the support itself.
- Do not reward upbeat answers or treat a difficult answer as a public discussion prompt.

For the group
Here’s what to do.
- 1
State that a lowered hand is a valid pass.
- 2
Count to three.
- 3
Everyone shows one to five fingers at the same time.
- 4
Pause long enough to look around, then start the meeting.

Take a moment to think. Passing or writing instead is always okay.
