- Choose the grouping rule and remove extra cards
- If needed, order cards privately to provide thoughtful supports or separate known conflicts

Keep it comfortable and useful.
Make room for everyone
- Provide large-print, high-contrast, tactile, or symbol-based cards.
- Let students remain seated while group members come to them.
- Display and say the matching rule.
- Avoid speed, elimination, or consequences for needing help finding a group.
Watch out for
- Do not treat teacher assumptions about who will ‘help’ another student as automatically correct.
- Avoid repeatedly positioning one student as a peer aide or behavior buffer.
- Use school policy and professional judgment when separation is required for safety.

For students
Here’s what to do.

Give one card to each student at the door or from a prepared stack.

Announce one rule: same number for groups of four, same suit for four larger groups, same color for two teams, or consecutive numbers for pairs.

Display the rule and a thirty-second timer without rewarding the fastest group.

Direct each completed group to a clear work location.
